Day 7: Mighty God

When Jesus was teaching in a crowd of people in Judea, a rich young man who claimed to have followed all the laws approached Jesus and asked what more he must do to have eternal life. Jesus tells the young man to go sell all of his possessions, give to the poor, and to follow him. The young man turns away sorrowfully, and Jesus speaks to the disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:23–26 MSG)

What is the mighty power of God that Jesus is describing here? For the rich young man, it’s the ability to stand in the gap between what can be bought or earned and what is freely given. Only Jesus, the author of our salvation, can grant access to the kingdom of God. All he requires of us is that we follow him.

Take a moment to repeat this prayer, and ask God to show you his power.

God, today I yield to your mighty power. Would you surprise me by giving me a glimpse into how mighty and powerful you are to make the impossible possible, and yet how personally you care for and see me?
