Day 5: Letting Go

But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely. (Psalm 59:16–17)

It’s our nature to try and control our lives. We all want things to go how we envision them, and it’s hard to let go of what we picture. We hustle to get what we want and expect results to match our efforts. But Christmas reminds us to be still, and it reminds us how deeply God loves us. He can do for us what we could never orchestrate ourselves, and he desires to do good in our lives. We are safe in his hands.

The way to experience his love more is to surrender our plans to him. Is there an area of your life where you need to open your hands and invite him in? Spend a few minutes asking God to reveal an opportunity to surrender to him.

God, I confess my tendency to control my life. I confess my fear that letting go will cost me. But I know that I am safe in your hands. You can do things in my life that I can’t even see are possible. Thank you that I can rely on you in every circumstance. Help me experience your deep love for me in a new way today. Give me perspective to see where I’ve tried to control my life. Give me courage to open my hands and rest on you.
